The Story of an Ancient Roman Glass Heart Ring

My customers are often the inspiration for many of my custom designs.  I was recently asked if I could make a ring with an ancient Roman piece of glass, cut into the shape of a heart.

I happen to have quite a nice collection of ancient Roman glass pieces. Most of the glass has been found in Afghanistan as parts of broken vessels and glassware that are not museum worthy.

I was instantly intrigued and with my flat lapidary machine, cut a few hearts for my customer to see if this was what he had in mind.

He chose the top one, which was my favorite as well. It had a lovely aquamarine color with a slightly iridescent patina  Next steps were some sketches:
Once the sketch was approved I sent him photos of the work in progress:
Then, a few finishing touches, a brushed matte finish and personal message engraved inside the band.
The ring was a hit!
