Crème de Cassis - Spinel Ring

This simple yet stunning ring features a sparkly magenta, faceted spinel. Until recently spinel was under greatly appreciated, yet interestingly, it had been mistaken for ruby in many crown jewels.  The “Black Prince’s ruby" set in England’s Imperial State Crown and displayed in the Tower of London, is actually a Spinel. 

Spinel comes in various shades of red, orange, pink, purple, blue and black.  The color of this spinel inspired me to name this ring after the French liqueur used in a "Kir Royale" cocktail, Crème de Cassis. It was invented in 1841 in the city of Dijon in the Burgundy region of France.

Set in a 22 karat gold bezel with a 20 karat, 2mm wide oval band.  20k is often chosen  for ring bands because it retains the rich yellow of high karat gold, yet is more resistant to wear.  I alloy and form this wire in my studio, along with the 22 karat gold. Stone is 8 x 6 mm.
