A contemporary twist on an ancient theme, this 22 karat gold disk has been granulated and set with your choice of an emerald or a ruby.
Made in the traditions of ancient goldsmiths, every part of this pendant has been hand fabricated, starting with a small glob of gold. Using ancient techniques, the artist has made sheet, wire, and granules over the course of several weeks.
Granulation was used as embellishment in ancient times and is done today by a relatively small number of goldsmiths. Granulation takes years of practice using the purest of metals. Each tiny granule is made by hand and making enough for one piece of jewelry can take weeks. Each granule is then placed one by one on the piece with a tiny brush. The piece is heated almost to the melting point. At that precise moment, the granules fuse and become one with the item being granulated.
The bright yellow of the 22 karat gold contrasts beautifully with the oxidized silver chain and is finished with a handmade 22 karat gold clasp.
18 inches long. Signed on the back by the artist.
