Legendary and magical, absinthe has long been a controversial drink. Also known as the “la fée verte” (the Green Fairy) it was believed that the green liquid in the bottle contained a dangerous and hallucinogenic drug.
Absinthe originated in the canton of Neuchâtel in Switzerland. It achieved great popularity as an alcoholic drink in late 19th- and early 20th-century France, particularly among Parisian artists and writers. Charles Baudelaire, Paul Verlaine, Arthur Rimbaud, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Amedeo Modigliani, Vincent van Gogh, Oscar Wilde, Aleister Crowley, and Alfred Jarry were all notorious “bad men” of that day who were (or were thought to be) devotees of the Green Fairy.
The glowing green of this Tsavorite Garnet radiates the color of Absinthe. An emerald-green variety of grossular garnet, tsavorite is one of the most popular and expensive varieties of garnet. Set in a hand granulated 22 karat gold bezel with a 20 karat, 2mm wide oval band. 20k is often chosen for ring bands because it retains the rich yellow of high karat gold, yet is more resistant to wear. I alloy and form this wire in my studio, along with the 22 karat gold. Cabochon is 8 x 6 mm.
